Nightwing: The Darkest Knight

This fan film is the sequel to the short lived web series Nightwing: Prodigal. I wasn’t even aware this existed until I was doing a write-up on Prodigal. I’m glad to see they did a follow-up and completed the story. It’s crazy what they were able to accomplish.

Nightwing returns home after a brief stint as the Green Lantern to find a close friend of his murdered. On the hunt for answers and justice, Nightwing steps beyond his normal boundaries of control until he is finally forced to confront the person responsible for the horrific crime. Torn between loyalty and justice, Nightwing is forced into a fight he would never want to have, but is forced to in order to save his city.

I may have been a little critical in my critique of the original Prodigal series. You hurt the ones you love. A major improvement with The Darkest Knight is the dialogue. In the original series the script was full on camp and lines you may have read in an 80’s DC comic book. This time out they punched it up to a more realistic tone. I mean as realistic as a film about a guy who wears his underwear and beats up criminals.

I applaud the fight chorography in one particular scene. It was all done in one shot and looked pretty damn amazing.

Watching The Darkest Knight makes me long for a Nightwing movie, perhaps a film with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I’m sure that ship has sailed. But there is always the new live action Teen Titans show that is supposed to be debuting in 2018. I know they’re introducing Dick Grayon as Robin, but perhaps in future season they will delve into the Judas Contract territory and Nightwing will rise from that. Should be interesting!

Before you check this film out make sure you check out Nightwing: Prodigal and then come on back to witness the conclusion of this story.
