Nightwing: Escalations

I lost track of Escalations after the first season. To my surprise they are actually producing new episodes of this Nightwing based fan film web series. Checking out the third season I become a bit confused. Where the hell is Nightwing? I mean it is called Nightwing: Escalations yet according the official IMDB the character has only appeared in three episodes.

A mysterious serial killer is rampaging through Gotham City. With an impending leave of absence forcing his hand, Batman prepares Gotham for his protégé, Nightwing, to take over as its guardian. Meanwhile, Harvey Dent, with a clean bill of health from Arkham Asylum and a surgically restored face, grapples with his inner demons as the “Scalpel” killer consumes Gotham.

Years ago I remember watching the likes of General Hospital and One Life to Live. If you’re not familiar with those shows they were what are called soap operas. Escalations is literally a superhero soap opera. The action is minimal, but the drama is front and center. And underneath the layers a lot of the plotlines I’d seen on those old shows appear in this one.

This series should really be called Barbara Gordon: Escalations as the prominent character is Barbara and actress Katalena Mermelstein has been in most of the episodes. I’m not sure the story to why this happened. I can only guess the actor that played Nightwing was no longer available for any given reason.

Escalations is a fun watch. It is definitely its own beast. There’s not quite a fan film series like it.

  1. They have a great Commissioner Gordon, as well as a great Det.Bullock, both look like the chars from 1992 Batman cartoon. Looks promising.
