Y: The Last Man is a comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra published by Vertigo beginning in 2002. The series is about the only man to survive the apparent simultaneous death of every male mammal (barring the same man’s pet monkey) on Earth. The series was published in sixty issues by Vertigo and collected in a series of ten paperback volumes. Our guests for this episode of Fan Film Podcast are taking the comic’s source material (Minus the monkey) making it into a thirty minute short film.

Writer/director Ryan O’Leary and actor James Kuck join us this time out to give us a rundown on their new film. Make sure you check out the film’s FaceBook page.

Fan Film Podcast Episode 66

June 25, 2010

In the past year there has been a huge leap in the quality of fan films. As a fan film “reporter” I call these films achievements or a better term could be landmarks. I would point you to The Hunt For Gollum, Born of Hope, City of Scars, Makazie One, and a couple that are probably slipping my memory. Each of these films listed have brought a legitimacy to a genre that myself and Fanboy Will hold dear. This holds true for our guest this time out on the FFP, Mr. Eddie Lebron who brings us his vision of the Nintendo Campcon character, MegaMan. Remember the days when fan films were about eight or ten minutes? Eddie has created a 94-minute feature film. Now why is this a landmark? There have been fan films of that length before. None have had the quality of writing, acting, sound design, special effects, and just overall fun factor meaning I wasn’t watching the clock to see when this thing was finally going to end. MegaMan does what any film should do – it sucks you into the story from beginning to end.

I’d also like to comment on the lack of Fan Film Podcasts we’ve had this year. The biggest answer is time and the lesser answer is more technical. The technical issue has been addressed. The time issue is another matter. Both Fanboy Will and myself have been working in other aspects of our lives that limit fan film coverage. It’s my intension to get us back on track to at least 2 shows monthly starting in July. We have some great people to talk with already lined up. Thank you for the support thus far.

Fan Film Podcast Episode 65

May 30, 2010

WOW! It’s been a few weeks since our last Fan Film Podcast. The reason for our absence? Just not enough hours in the day to do everything that needs to be done. Is that a good excuse? Probably not, but it’s the only one I’ve got for you. We’ll make it up to you by having more quality CASTS throughout the summer. Fanboy Will and I already have some great people lined up.

So let’s start back with our 21-year-old writer/director guest Dan Marcus who has created his own short superhero film called “Fallen”. If you watch the trailer you’ll find the production more grounded in the same vein as Heroes. You know. No tights. Just powers! Now you have to hate Dan because at such a young age he already has the tools to make quality productions at minimal cost. To what I’ve seen of The Fallen so far it equals a lot of what I see in the movies or on television and in some cases exceeds. I can’t imagine what he’ll be doing in five or ten years from now, but I know it is going to be crazy awesome.

Give your ears a treat and give a listen.

Fan Film Podcast Episode 64

Is anyone familiar with the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon? The game is based under the assumption that any actor can be linked through his or her film roles to actor Kevin Bacon within six steps. I was having a bizarre thought while editing this week’s Podcast and took it a step farther. Do the fan film makers Fanboy Will and I talk with fit into the game? In some cases – very, very easily. Sometimes I think people get so enamored with “celebrity” we don’t realize how attainable or how we regular folk connect to these so called “stars”. So I took this week’s guest Chris Bouchard and put him to my hypothesis. Actually, Chris was pretty easy. But let’s play and maybe next time it will be a little more challenging.

OH WAIT! You may actually be asking yourself who Chris Bouchard is. I’m sure if you listen to this Podcast or know anything about fan films ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ has crossed your path. In my opinion the film in question along with another Lord of the Rings fan film called ‘Born of Hope’ both have legitimized the genre even further. And to borrow from an old, tired both films have raised the bar to what fan films can and will become.

So onto the game. Onto Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

1) Chris Bouchard directed Max Bracey is The Hunt for Gollum.
2) Max Bracey portrayed Baby Superman in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.
3) Superman IV: The Quest for Peace starred Gene Hackman.
4) Gene Hackman was in Get Shorty with John Travolta.
5) John Travolta was in Broken Arrow with Christian Slater.
6) And Christian Slater was in Murder in the First with Mr. Kevin Bacon.

So I give you Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. A game even the fan film lovers can play.

Fan Film Podcast Episode 63

YO JOE! I mean YO SCOTT! I’m talking Scott Grass from Forsaken Filmz who has brought us the G.I. Joe fan film “End Of Peace”. G.I. Joe is not a property you normally see in the world of fan films due the extensive cast of characters, intricate costuming, and potential for costly special effects. But if there’s one thing fan film makers can do is stretch the imagination to make the inconceivable conceivable. Scott and his crew have juggled what could potentially be a disastrous production into a cool film that holds the heart and integrity to what the die hard G.I. Joe fans would expect from such a project.

As all members of the fan film making community can imagine it’s not always easy making a final production, to actually get it out there for all to see. Scott talks candidly about the trials and disappointments in took to get “End of Peace” to eventually see the light of day. And Forsaken Filmz is not a one trick pony. Oh no! As the normal genesis of the people that make these fan films they progress into their own original projects in this case Forsaken’s “Thou Shall Kill”.

So DUSTY yourself off. Get ready to get all GUNG HO! Grab yourself some BARBEQUE and some BAZOOKA bubble gum. Turn off the LAW and ORDER. Move into a room with LOW LIGHT. Get all FOOTLOOSE. Prepare to ROCK ‘N ROLL ! And join us for some CHUCKLES only on the Fan Film Podcast.

Fan Film Podcast Episode 62

So Fanboy Will tells me of this fan film called X-23 Terrell Culbert. What the hell is an X-23? More importantly what the hell is a Terrell Culbert? Using my keen research skills I turn to the inter oracle known as THE GOOGLE.

A top-secret program is tasked to replicate the original Weapon X experiment that produced the feral mutant Wolverine. The Y chromosome from the only genetic sample from Weapon X is unable to be salvaged. So a female clone is proposed in the form of X-23. X-23 was created for the X-Men: Evolution animated television series and later brought into the comics pretty much how Harley Quinn from the Batman mythos did a decade or more ago.

OK! That answers that. Now who is this Culbert guy? The oracle tells us Terrell is a prolific talent who writes, draws, and makes fan films. I mean, if he didn’t make fan films I wouldn’t even be writing this, but I digress. Terrell runs his own imprint and productions under the label Breathe Again Entertainment. Along with his “X” related fan film his original character sEVE is being produced in comic book form and soon to the visual realm of film.

Also in this Fan Film Podcast, Fanboy Will sums up our feelings and thoughts beautifully on the passing of Andrew Koenig who took his own life this past week. Most of you may know Andrew from his portrayal of the Joker in Sandy Collora’s Batman: Dead End. Although, certainly not an embodiment of his entire life of work, this is a performance that will have a special place here in the confines of the Fan Film Podcast. R.I.P. Andrew.

Episode 61

February 5, 2010

Welcome back to the FFP. We kick off our first show of 2010 with not one, but two interviews. Our first guest is Tim Brown representing Inked Monkey Productions talks briefly and answers a few questions about the third annual Superman Celebration Fan Film Competition held in Metropolis, Illinois. We’ve asked Tim back on our Podcast in June when he’ll give us a play by play of the happenings of the competition as well as the entire Superman Celebration as a whole. You can learn more about the competition, rules, and prizes by linking HERE.

For our second guest we bring you a man who calls himself Clutch! YEPPER! Just Clutch. He’s the writer and director behind the unique Star Wars fan film Makazie One. In my opinion and I’ll also speak for Fanboy Will the best two Star Wars Fan Films released in the year 2009 are by far Crossroads of Destiny and Makazie One. These films clearly show that the combination of talent, technology, and simple love for the universe which these characters are based is shrinking the gap to what we see Lucasfilm release compared to what we can make with our own ingenuity. What Clutch has done with Makazie One is put his own staple onto the Star Wars mythos incorporating a different style and mood to the franchise not yet seen before. The results? AMAZING! Make sure to check out the official Makazie One website.

Clutch also discusses his original science fiction project, The Butterfly Chronicles.

November 21, 2009

fanboywilljohn_001Fanboy Will attended the 2009 Big Apple Comic Convention most specifically a panel that was supposed to include The Dukes of Hazzard stars Catherine Bach, Tom Wopat, and John Schneider. It turned out the only one able to attend due to various reasons was John Schneider. He did not disappoint as he talked very candidly about both Hazzard and his other SUPER acting gig on Smallville.

Episode 59

November 7, 2009

fanfilmpostcast059_001This week we’ve got two – two shows in one. The first half of this week’s show we speak to Kellen Gibbs and George Norman Lippert about the Harry Potter themed fan film production “James Potter and the Hall of Elders’ Crossing”. There’s an interesting spin on how this film came about. George wrote a full length fan fiction novel continuing the series originally created by J. K. Rowling. Kellen, in turn, found the story online visualizing George’s writing into a short film. On Saturday, November 21st that film will be put online for the world to see.

The second half of this week’s show we’ll talk to Fanboy Will about his experiences at this year’s Big Apple Comic Convention that was held October 16th through the 18th. He was able to briefly speak with Supergirl’s Helen Slater and Smallville’s John Schneider.
