Fan Film Podcast Episode 65
May 30, 2010
WOW! It’s been a few weeks since our last Fan Film Podcast. The reason for our absence? Just not enough hours in the day to do everything that needs to be done. Is that a good excuse? Probably not, but it’s the only one I’ve got for you. We’ll make it up to you by having more quality CASTS throughout the summer. Fanboy Will and I already have some great people lined up.
So let’s start back with our 21-year-old writer/director guest Dan Marcus who has created his own short superhero film called “Fallen”. If you watch the trailer you’ll find the production more grounded in the same vein as Heroes. You know. No tights. Just powers! Now you have to hate Dan because at such a young age he already has the tools to make quality productions at minimal cost. To what I’ve seen of The Fallen so far it equals a lot of what I see in the movies or on television and in some cases exceeds. I can’t imagine what he’ll be doing in five or ten years from now, but I know it is going to be crazy awesome.
Give your ears a treat and give a listen.

A classic fan film that for one reason or another never made it onto the Follies. We will correct that injustice by placing it on the site this day. George Lucas in Love is an independent short film that started attracting notice in June 1999 when it was passed around Hollywood offices as a filmmaker’s “calling card”. Many wrongly think it was a student film, but its makers had been out of film school for a few years when it was shot. It is an homage and spoof of both Star Wars and Shakespeare in Love. The film was directed by Joe Nussbaum, who financed the film with money his grandparents left him. Nussbaum recruited several fellow University of Southern California graduates to help him with his movie. The producer, casting director, musical composer, executive producer, and many actors are all alumni.

A revamp of the successful ’80s television series by Stephen J. Cannell, where an ordinary school teacher is given superhuman powers after receiving a super-suit by aliens. Unfortunately he loses the instruction manual and is clumsy in the utilization of his powers. Together with Bill Maxwell, an old-school FBI agent, and now a sidekick, named Ashley Rizzo, they battle crime in ways that fall into the comedic category. These webisodes are used with permission, but the production is in no way affiliated with the Cannell Company.

My apologies for the delay in this fourth installment of my Who fan film column – a couple of topics I’ve been preparing aren’t quite ready for publication just yet, but more importantly, the new season of “real” Doctor Who has recently debuted on the BBC (and BBC-America) after quite a long hiatus, bringing with it a whole new set of lead actors, new production team, and lots of other bits and pieces that have got the rabid fanboys (like me) all distracted and excited. Fan Film Follies doesn’t normally make it a habit to link you over to other news sites, but we’ll make the exception this time out due to an interesting article by the United Kingdom online news source Guardian.co.uk written by Jane Graham. Check it out. Good stuff!
