Fan Film Podcast Episode 62

February 27, 2010

So Fanboy Will tells me of this fan film called X-23 Terrell Culbert. What the hell is an X-23? More importantly what the hell is a Terrell Culbert? Using my keen research skills I turn to the inter oracle known as THE GOOGLE.

A top-secret program is tasked to replicate the original Weapon X experiment that produced the feral mutant Wolverine. The Y chromosome from the only genetic sample from Weapon X is unable to be salvaged. So a female clone is proposed in the form of X-23. X-23 was created for the X-Men: Evolution animated television series and later brought into the comics pretty much how Harley Quinn from the Batman mythos did a decade or more ago.

OK! That answers that. Now who is this Culbert guy? The oracle tells us Terrell is a prolific talent who writes, draws, and makes fan films. I mean, if he didn’t make fan films I wouldn’t even be writing this, but I digress. Terrell runs his own imprint and productions under the label Breathe Again Entertainment. Along with his “X” related fan film his original character sEVE is being produced in comic book form and soon to the visual realm of film.

Also in this Fan Film Podcast, Fanboy Will sums up our feelings and thoughts beautifully on the passing of Andrew Koenig who took his own life this past week. Most of you may know Andrew from his portrayal of the Joker in Sandy Collora’s Batman: Dead End. Although, certainly not an embodiment of his entire life of work, this is a performance that will have a special place here in the confines of the Fan Film Podcast. R.I.P. Andrew.

Judge Minty – A Fan Film

February 27, 2010

“Where are the Judge Dredd fan films,” you may ask yourself. The wait is over. There’s a production in place to bring the world of Dredd to life. Hopefully it will get the bad taste of that terrible 1995 version starring Sylvester Stallone out of our mouths. According to the official BLOG the film will be based on Judge Minty, a character created by John Wagner and Mick McMahon. An aging Judge who is forced to ‘retire’ from the streets, mainly it seems because he has become too compassionate. He chooses to take ‘The Long Walk’ into the Cursed Earth, there “to take law to the lawless”. The film will be based around his first experiences in the radioactive wastes.

Steven Sterlacchini is the man making it happen. The film began shooting in December 2009 at the Magna Science Museum in Rotherham, United Kingdom. Edmund Dehn has been cast in the lead role of Minty. There is indeed an appearance by the Dredd man himself portrayed by Dredd artist Greg Staples. That’s enough to get any Fanboy’s heart pumping. The release date has not been set, but this is one film the Follies is going to be keeping an extra close eye on.

R.I.P. Andrew Koenig

February 26, 2010

The actor son of Star Trek veteran Walter Koenig has been found dead in a park in Vancouver, police have said.

Koenig said his 41-year-old son Andrew, who suffered from depression, “took his own life”.

Police spokeswoman Jana McGuinness said she did not believe anyone else had been involved, adding that a coroner had now taken over the investigation.

Andrew was best known for his recurring role as ‘Boner’ on US sitcom Growing Pains, between 1985-1989.

His parents reported him missing when he failed to return home to Los Angeles after visiting friends in Vancouver earlier this month.

‘Talk to somebody’

On Thursday, his body was discovered in Vancouver’s 1,000-acre Stanley Park, where Koenig liked to walk and was last seen.

Walter, who played Lieutenant Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series, said his son was “obviously in a lot of pain” to have taken his own life.

In a statement he said that Andrew had given away his belongings and had not been taking his medication. He urged others suffering from depression to seek help.

“If you are one of those people who can’t handle it any more, know people are out there who really care before you make that final decision,” Koenig, 71, said. “Talk to somebody.”
