Episode 47

May 23, 2009

fanfilmpodcast47We are deeply honored to have Doctor Robbins Barstow as a very special guest this time out on the Fan Film Podcast. Not only has Dr. Robbins produced the only Tarzan fan film that we are aware of, but also has one of his films in the Library of Congress under the National Film Registry.

In all fairness, I’m sure there are other Tarzan fan films out there somewhere. What makes Dr. Robbins film unique and special is that it was produced in 1936 making this a true pioneering film in the realm to what we classify as a “FAN FILM.” The short is called Tarzan and the Rocky Gorge and I’m sure hard core fan film connoisseurs like Fanboy Will and myself will agree it stands head to toe with most of what is coming out of the community today. It’s a fun film totally reflective on the times.

As mentioned above in December 2008, Disneyland Dream was named to the National Film Registry by the Librarian of Congress. This 30-minute amateur documentary film tells the story of the Barstow’s adventures going to the Magic Kingdom back in 1956. If watching someone’s home movies of their vacation doesn’t especially interest you make a special exception in this case as the whole experience makes for an interesting story.

You can watch all of the films by Dr. Robbins at the Barstow Travel Adventure hosted by Archive.org.

fanfilmpodcast46Imagine, if you will, getting to write and direct your own films for a living. Then imagine that the actresses you’re hiring to play your characters are sexy and beautiful. On top of that, they wear tight fitting spandex as their characters dictate. Ok. If you’re a girl that part may not be all that exciting for you, but if you’re a hormone with legs like the male species that’s a bit of all right.

The man who we are most jealous of making these babe-elicious superheroine films is Mr. Andy Rodriguez through his company New Phoenix Filmworks International. Andy has created his own universe of characters including such names as RetroGirl, Darkfury, Powercat, and many others. These are just not mere titillation films. Although, all his characters are beautiful women in skimpy outfits the films never go beyond a PG-13 rating and you’ll always find a comic book themed plot to go along with the film.
