Nightwing: Prodigal

Nightwing: Prodigal is a fan film web series spotlighting the ex-Boy Wonder, Dick Grayson. The series also spotlights the Batman mytho characters if the form of Oracle, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Riddler, Bane and Catwoman.

A fan series based on the DC Comics character Nightwing (former Robin). A young Nightwing must persuade Batman to return to Gotham and fight crime again.

The production is extremely well done. Prodigal looks pretty and sounds pretty. I’m digging some of the editing choices most specifically the screen wipes that are used sparingly and appropriate when throughout the series. Also scattered among the series are scenes with colorful highlights – a very nice touch.

When it comes to the acting it’s pretty much what you would expect from your average fan film. It’s hit or miss. In all fairness, the dialogue probably doesn’t help in that fact. Most of the script is very comic bookish. That’s probably a strange thing to indicate considering this fan film is based on a comic book. At times what works for a comic book doesn’t necessarily work for live action. If I could compare the script to another live action property I would compare it to the Batman and Robin movie.

It is a Follies Pick so even know I may be a little rough in my comments it was completely enjoyable. It didn’t suck. If I was to give my deepest praise towards this series is the fact they made the characters their own. To many times have I seen fan films where they just copy the villains and portray them as Hollywood already has. Prodigal doesn’t do that. Overall, there’s a fresh interpretation of characters we all know and love.

The series was never completed, but there was a follow up fan film Nightwing: The Darkest Knight that you can link to here.
